Is the misspelling of “jewellery” in 5d a typo or has Everyman become an American?

Ian
The spelling is correct (with double R) for the jewellery.
The spelling with one R is a nautical word, a rope for fastening a sail to the yard. (Chambers 12h)

Nice crossword this week, solved at goldilocks pace. LOI was 3d... the "C." threw me. I was thinking too cryptically. But then again maybe that's the trap.
4d also stumped me for a good while.
COD is probably 20a because it was the funniest.

well done all.

Unusually for me, I can parse 4d perfectly but can't see the definition in the clue. Was my LOI. Everything else made sense...

Hi Sheilagh,

4d - 3 letter "concession" + 2 letter "alternative" + 2 letter "old man", all in reverse and starting at the bottom/"upset" - definition is "becoming"

Thanks Brendan - as said - I got the parsing. It was the definition that escaped me. Just can't see that 'becoming' is synonymous with answer though... Can you give me a sentence with 'becoming' where I could swap it for answer?

Becoming here is an adjective, as in suitable, befitting, e.g. becoming behaviour, ????? behaviour …

Sorry Sheilagh, I was watching some Sherlock and obviously misread your post - my apologies. Thankfully Jono was able to explain it.
