Ha! Thanks Jono, the funny thing is that I accepted that "time" could refer to something like a prison sentence but thought the answer was too disconnected.... and what do I find in definition 9 right next to the 'prison sentence'? 😂

Well, I made very heavy weather of this and didn't particularly enjoy it. Like others, there were some that I guessed from the crossers and worked back to the wordplay. I have the answers but still can't see 7d, 20a or 16d. Not my finest hour.

20a is 2 1 2 with the 1 being what you do on a ballot sheet. Against gives you the first two letters but it’s pretty obscure. Like you I think I have 16d but can’t parse it but Chancellor of the Exchequer gives you the last two letters. Yet to get 7d

16d parses 5,2,2. Bankers in autumn give the first 2. Chancellor… the second 2. I thought this was an excellent surface.

well, i have a filled grid, but question marks against 7 answers.

no problem with 19d though - the answer is obvious, and google explains it.

7d is 2 (bill) inside 4 (demonstrate) + 3 (case)

7 is (2 inside 4) followed by 3, defn "run through combinations".

I loved last week's themed Prize by Qaos, but this one didn't excite me.
