This to me felt like what we’d get if the Everyman ever had a clear theme.

Since I’m here (after a very long break): Brendan, re 3 down- I feel as if I’ve come across this in film/tv, not sure, though. Definitely seen it in English texts relating to habits and customs - for example, here in Finland, in touristy type texts, sauna bath is differentiated from ?????????, since both are considered to be types of bathing.

Note by Admin - Word removed as it was the answer to the clue, I had emails about the matter.

Well I enjoyed it. My favourite grid and one of Boatman’s too it seems.

The OED shows 3d as hyphenated and dates it to 1803. Chambers notes it as “old”. Perhaps a little bit of ‘grid crunch’ going on here as nothing else fits.

Like Brendan, I did query the lack of indication of a double replacement in 7d though.

I read Alan Connor is the new Guardian crossword editor, Hugh having retired after 25 years in the job. Alan’s been known to drop into this forum from time to time in his guise as Everyman. It will be interesting to see if we notice any change.

boatman is high on my don't bother with list. more than any other setter, i'm not sure i've got it right even when it probably is.
surely the clue for 19d is a no-no?
as for 6d - impossible without google!

We all missed something very clever going on in last weekend’s prize by Brockwell.

Each numbered solution contains the chemical element symbol of that number in the periodic table, all the way from 1 to 27.

Chris, perhaps your looking at 19d as I did at first. But “central to posture” is just one letter …

couldn't believe 13a was right since he'd already used it in the clue for 19d - and could have chosen any dance - unless he was bent on getting the letter central to more than one word ...
