I still can't get 23. Could someone help with the wordplay? A hint for 13 across would also be helpful.

thanks drxx - my error was not having any bars in the rows with single entry, forgetting there should be something between first and last letter!

Ukridge -
13A, first word is definition with a misprint... wordplay follows - what comes first in a theatre play? +++
23 you need to adjust penultimate word. Def is first word only.

23 - def is first 4 words with an adjustment. wp is 3 letter sign (not a synonym for sign) intertwined with i, t

13 - def is first word with adj. wp is a charade (not container as i first thought)

Excited to be finally putting answers in the grid after getting all themstic stuff last night and having 75% of answers already.
Please help me solve 24a and 28a, thanks. I can see required adjustments to clues.

24a - A 5 letter word for 'rough'/hoarse without its 'skin'.
28a - A double def, the first is quite obscure ('plug' means to hit) the second part has the misprint (it's a commonplace/slang word for a 'story' that isn't particularly...).

Thanks for saying 'hoarse' !
Very obscure synonym for rough.
Still can't get 16, (steal steal steal) despite your earlier clue.
Other than that, very near to grid fill.

The 2nd 'steal' could literally carry the 'l' from the 3rd 'steal' to give a fairly modern slang word for 'steal'.

Finally completed! I thought this was really tough, but ultimately satisfying. Really clever construction. Certainly learned some new word meanings with this puzzle!
