got there! though, having shot many such for Granada in the 60's, I'd never encountered these .... but what a clever structure - thanks, Jack.

Genius is the accurate word. The cleverest crossword structure I have ever come across. The moment of realisation - in fact both of them - was sublime.

Just one query...I can't see how ON is removed from 18a (which I have as Naming two to collect evidence of crash flying lesson left). I see TO as the arguably redundant word there, and can only see two Ns in any event, neither of which can be spared.

Any assistance to satisfy me that this is perfect, as well as genius?

The 'on' comes from 'lesson' so wordplay is ii ('two') around 'dent' ('evidence of crash') and 'Flying' less 'l' ('left').

It all hinges on how you interpret 'about' the grid (I think).
