Thank you jono. With the help of OneLook Dictionary and Wikipedia I've filled in the gaps. Not a name I knew. I tried to read some C S Lewis 50 years ago but decided he was not for me.

I think the difficulty with this puzzle lies in some of the slightly strange definitions Brendan is using and some weird clue construction.

Only 17 and 18 to get but have been staring at them for 30 minutes now and that usually means it's rest time and come back to it.

Never heard of 1d and still can't parse 5d despite the comments on here. Not sure I'm feeling the love for this one.

17 is a very strange definition - you would have more chance just ignoring it! When you have the first letter, 18 is fairly obvious.

5 is a hidden after one word in the clue is modified per instructions. Defn. "title role".
