I found this very difficult but very entertaining when things dropped into place, especially 21 and 23. No-one has mentioned any problem with 3d, for which my answer must be correct but whose parsing i can't see. Some elements of wasn't and hotel, but how do they fit together to make the rain-hit event?

3 is an inclusion ("entertaining"). 1 letter ("hotel") inside a 2-word phrase for "wasn't in".

Aha! Thanks for that. I was looking for something like Brothel as an entertaining hotel, before I had the crossers.

Finally finished after revisiting with fresh eyes this morning. I didn't get this. I don't understand 5d or 23d and many others were just words or phrases I barely knew.

That is not to say it was a bad puzzle or that I didn't enjoy the fight. Some of the clues were very cleverly constructed. But not for me this one.

Great puzzle. Loved 23d.
Initally thought 12a was an anagram of KINGBORN. Had the initially letter, and came up with a surprising answer, which of course was not the solution.
Can anybody spot the amusing anagram?

Brendan and geezer, didn't realise you were keen on chess. Do you play tournaments at all?

The 'tal' in my nickname comes from the great Mikhail.

My feelings too rocky, 5d common abbreviation for men (military) three letter island around north. Like you I don’t understand 23d.

23d combines the alternate letters (at intervals) of one word in the clue around (holding) the outside letters (jacket) from another. The deception is that it has nothing at all to do with the late Bob Monkhouse

Only started this today.

Had to come here for a hint for 24A, last one in.

I can't parse 26A though.
