Many thanks to Geeker @44, Brendan @42,44 and 45 and Minno at 51

I've finished now. I'm not sure 24ac is a familiar name to me; I didn't know the abbreviation for "mark", though I had identified the answer as a possible. I was completely misdirected by 25ac, so thanks for the hints.

In fact, thank you to everyone for your input. My FOI was 4ac and my LOI was 19d. My CODs were 4ac, 6d and 16ac.

I haven't even had my glass of white wine yet.

I'll be back next week.

Minno, honestly, I was 99.9% certain that 14d wrote that weepy song and was about to make exactly the same point when I saw the post from Chris but that 0.01% was enough for me to Google - although he has written a poem:-)

Hi Ohcelt, that's him - I was only young when he was in his prime but I remember his tactic of always dropping to the very back until the run in and, as you say, his hat:-)

I had a quick scan of this this morning but didn't really make any progress. Now I have a bit of time and a glass of wine i've picked it up again and I don't think I'm on Picaroon's wavelength at all. Really struggling. So as a helper for the NW is 9a the obvious first as in biblical?

HI Rocky,

Finished the crossword with one mistake which I have corrected, but fascinated by the Dave Wottle post. Well remember the late (great?) David Coleman's commentary " And here comes Wottle with the Throttle"

Now I'm watching Trom and I can't solve and read subtitles at the same time. But. 4a. Famous Barker or just canine related?

4a always reminds me of Carousel - why would anyone construct a musical from such s depressing story?
