Thanks Brendan

Got 23d thanks to you. Watching telly now, so will leave the rest until I talk to my friend in Sheffield tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone for their hints.

I did reasonably well by myself this week which was a nice surprise.

But I can’t quite get the SW corner. I have two possibilities for 22a starting with P or C but can’t fully parse either. And I can’t find a satisfactory answer for 22d that fits with either of them. Also missing 24a.

I have a solution for 10a but can’t parse it.

Hi FeeBee,

22a - 4 letter "clean" minus its last letter/'mostly' _ 4 letter "quarterdeck" which you need to split in two, so 'quarter (of a) deck' - definition is "hobby" and it begins with a P.

22d - Double definition.

24a - Straight anagram - definition is "a by-product of hard labour".

10a - 7 letter "one inspects pupils" minus its last 2 letters/'losing way' with "way" an abbreviation - definition is "round window"

Thanks Brendan.
All sorted now.

I think I liked this puzzle overall - an interesting mix of everyday words with some obscure things thrown in to stretch us.

Hi all
We take forever to do the prize crossword and benefit from the forum. This week if anyone is still there we can’t parse/ get 4 and 23. What is the horse in 23? Not sure about 4 at all. Thanks!

Hi Ganda
4 the mass is an abbreviation, around a slang word for fashionable. Def. "man on board".
23 it's a prestigious breed of horse, backwards, with "first" inside, def. "server".

Hi Ganda,

4d - 2 letter "mass" (abbr. for a weight/mass) goes around 2 letter "fashionable" - definition is "man on board" (the board is in a game)

23a - "horse" is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and last letter all reversed so B??A becomes A??B and goes around 3 letter "first".
