A rigorous challenge and a very satisfying solve with no ambiguity about the answers - once I got there, that is! Many thanks, Hamish.

Grrrr! All done apart from7d which I can't solve. I have all the crossers, one of which will need to be a change to 7d. Think I know what the changed letter in 15a needs to be. But.......

A very gentle nudge would help me get on with my other jobs today. Thanks.

Simond9x, 7d refers to a science fiction novel.

Ah, thanks Mattrom, 7d was also my last one in, but I hadn’t picked up on that reference.

Ah, thanks. I've never heard of it (not my genre) but, as ever, Google is my friend. Funnily enough, I'd been chewing on the final grid entry as a possibility for some time but couldn't relate it back to the clue so ignored it. All done. Now, where's the creosote?

Read the comments but 7d still unsolved. I suspect the original solution is something I don’t know. Without spoiling others’ fun’ can you tell me how the WP works?

It's 26 that I can't get. I think I've completed the rest, but I've been staring at 26 on and and off for hours. Any hints?

Begemot, the 'burden' isn't a heavy load, it's more... musical.

mrsh - Google 2nd and 3rd words together then look at the 4th entry for 'In popular culture'. Take it from there.
