It’s a standard cryptic so I don’t think the clue numbering will extend to 50. Best I can think of is that a bull’s eye in darts is worth 50. So not quite getting a 50 would be a near miss ?

Re 28a NEAR MISSES....it's a standard grid crossword and there is no clue numbered 50, so the parse is a bit of a mystery.
