I'm going to give up on this one with a few blanks left in the SE. Too many unknowns to be much fun, and others where the solution seems only very loosely related to the clue (6,13, for example).
I did like 12a.

OK, I've now got it all filled in, but am still puzzled by some answers. I mentioned 6,13 previously.

Also 26a. The one I'm thinking of isn't the real name. The only other Oxford connection I can think of is with a TV series, and he isn't a don. Perhaps my answer is wrong!

Does 8 down relate to Romanists, one born outside Italy?

Not yet finished, but isn't the point that all are 15ds?

Chris, 6,13 was a spy and this was his 15 or 17 or ‘cover’. 26 I have the Oxford don as an author who wrote under a 15 which is based on a reversal of his real name

OldPS, yes exactly, 15, 17 or even 4+5 when read together

Thanks jono
Why "This was frequently" though? Is it just a reference to the number of books he wrote?
I must have 26 wrong then - it's not a reversal of anything I can see!

Chris, yes I guess so, book ‘covers’ perhaps. Now I’m looking at 26 again I’m not entirely sure of the wordplay, perhaps someone else can explain

26a I assume it refers to 2 very famous of the theme. One of them is a 15d and one isn't, One a first name and one a surname.
