I pronounce oar, awe, or, ore, o'er exactly the same. Same for poor, pour, pore; law, lore, lure.

Definitely the "r" sound at the end of floor. I understand that some Brits don't pronounce the "r", but I would have thought that the vowel sounds would still be different. Having seen this homophone in a crossword previously, I got the latest clue right away, but I have to agree with Malone that there should at least be a "for some" type of indicator. At least the fiddle clue had that, so that makes it acceptable in my book.

Jono, if we ever have another Zoom meetup, I will have to get you to say floor and flaw. πŸ˜€

I see Chambers does give two ways of pronouncing floor, but Collins and the OED only give the flaw variety.

Thanks Orson, Mathprofrockstar... and everyone else.

Yes, Floor pronounced the Scottish (and northern England and who knows where else) way is completely valid, it's not an exotic sub-species!

I suppose I had a similar reaction (as in 'no, floor/flaw is the correct one') when a Times crossword gave Earn and Urn as soundalikes. I was quite indignant, until I read the pronunciation notes in Chambers.

What do you think of this clue (non-cryptic) from the Mail?

Fried egg dish (8)

I could not think of any dishes involving fried eggs, but I got it eventually. Do you think it is accurate?

Well, it is cooked in a frying pan (though we finish it under a grill)...

Yes, thanks, but does that mean that anything cooked in a frying-pan can be described as fried? I cook curries in a frying-pan, but would not call them fried dishes.

I think the clue is accurate. If it had been "Fried-egg dish", then I would say it is wrong. I think the hyphen makes the difference.
