Hi roof
22 the "familiar" could be "...as thieves"
27 is going in a direction other than across or down. It's the non-thematic A one.
23 I thought one of the easier ones. Just take the first letter off a word for "fixed"

Hi Roof,
22a two letters for energy, four letters for familiar (minus the last letter)… as thieves might be?
27a A from the clue (this is deception as it has nothing to do with the theme) then a five letter word for hint.
23d first letter removed from a common item of furniture.

Hi jono
23 "to give" rather than "from"

22a is energy in two letters, then familiar as in "as thieves" minus the last letter.

Yes indeed, I meant to write ‘for’ not ‘from’

Really struggling with this one. We normally do it on the paper, but I've just switched to the app on Android phone.
Could someone tell me please if you can verify a word is correct? There has been mention of green ticks (?)

I don't use an app, but I think the "green tick" only appears when everything is correct.
On the "non-prize" puzzles, there is a "check" button in the online version, of course.

Yes, you need to have everything correct for the tick. Even then, it does take a little while to appear sometimes which can be frustrating. There’s no way of confirming individual clues

Most of the posts give Paul a rave review for this one, but I agree with those who find it irritating. The idea was very clever indeed but, given that most of the Saturday Guardian's are straightforward, it surely should have carried "a themed puzzle with the theme introduced in some clues" (or a similar expression).

I've been unable to parse 21 across, and hint would be welcome. Thanks
