8D was really tough even with the clues, took me ages to get it.

But it is 5 letter word for temporary accommodation, sandwiching an anagram of cream, which contains a 3 letter fish. When you see it it will make sense.

?P?C?E is not correct though. One of those is an R

Hi Roof,

19d - Is a double definition - the name of a (chirping) insect and a sport where "leg" and "on" can mean the same thing.

Hi PS

I've now got 18d, but it has messed up my answer for 27ac, which I was really pleased with. No wonder I couldn't get 23d ending with a G. A number of my answers are guesses. I can't fully parse them. Nine still to get!!!!

I think this is the worst Paul crossword I've attempted in years. He used to be a favourite, but not anymore. His clues have become too obscure and convoluted.

I think I might give up now and go to bed.

But before I go. Thanks to Brendan for 19d, which I just got. Only eight left now.

27A was the big red herring but I got that before even realising what the them was (probably didn't help). I needed a lot of help from here and still missing 4.

Paul does good puzzles he went a bit meta-cryptic this time and the grauniad misprunt not putting the them although classic grauniad is unforgivable really for those that bought the paper.

Finally got there after some much-needed help from this site. I've found many a marathon less exhausting. Thanks all.

Last clue gotten? 16d. I had in mind the two elements, but it took 21a to force my faulty hindsights back into the bottle, then recant.

i am stumped by this Paul, despite reading through all the posts here. It was thanks to this forum that I discovered there was a theme, as I was working from the actual paper. I'll wait a day or so before chucking Paul in the recycling, but for now I am literally drawing a blank.

Like you, Crypticsilver, I'm using the paper and so had no idea there were special instructions (because there weren't) and so no idea there was a theme. Not fair!
