Setter, first letter note regarding another note (1,5)

I agree that this was difficult, but although some clues were quite tortuous, all were fair, and most obscurities are confirmed in the BRB. I certainly had to resort to more word searches than I would have liked.

4d - Yes. (Welcome) MAT + LOCK

5d - MOTHERLINESS - Writing = MS "different" = OTHER "punishment" = LINES

3d - I think it might be POONA - An Oop! - although I'm not sure about this because wouldn't it be "oops!"?

Brendan, doesn't the 'brief' indicate the shortening of Oops?

PS I'm looking forward toi seeing what you think of today's EV. You've been enthusiastic, delighted, with many thematic puzzles (some of which I didn't enjoy!)

What can I say, Malone - I'm an upbeat type of guy 😉 but I'd the first to admit that I do too often get caught up 'in the moment':-)
