SB, Umbo, boss, has appeared a few times - and it is boss as in knob, part of a shield, stud etc.

Mumbo Jumbo is defined in Chambers as 'empty or foolish ritual', so not really 'nonsense'!

Ah, Malone, I might have guessed you would know.

Thanks for MUMBO-JUMBO, though it rather does for my supposed answer to 5D!.

I'll now soldier in in hope rather than expectation.

Bear of lb, thanks. Hope you managed to sort 5 D. Parts of this puzzle were distinctly tough, maybe even odd - I quite like the challenge of that!

I'm finding it challenging too but not in an enjoyable way.

43a Turning off at sideroad, avoiding some stick (7)
Distaff? staff = stick but where does the 'di' come from?

7d Express being closer, no longer quiet (5)
I think it's (p)utter, but how does putter = closer?

StrangelyBrown, just read backwards (turning) in the clue for 43!

7 The 'closer' is a Shutter, drop the Sh, no longer quiet.

Thanks yet again, I am finding this like pulling teeth. That last clue is so joyless, four separate bits have to be stuck together and it's only a seven letter word. Much prefer clues that have a bit of wit.
