i didn't spot the theme until it was mentioned here, of course - very clever!

22a: first four letters mean a moderate movement or a short stride, in a sense.

Thanks mathi. I wasn't thinking of a literal movement!

I think the theme is 18 d. He starred in many Films here in crossword and often worked with 13d 8d. Anyone else agree?

My thanks to those who have explained the theme(s). They entirely passed me by. But I would like help with 2d. How does the wordplay work if it is not just the sort of clue you get in general knowledge puzzles?

Hi Mangoban,

That's sounds pretty good, he does seem to be the one common link.

2d is a homophone. And guess who else starred in The Comedians (1967)

Hi David,

The answer is a word meaning "adapt" but is also a homophone/"say" of a famous British comedian, now sadly passed away.

David W @ (I forget!)
I needed to Google to find the film, which stars someone with a homophonic name (I had to be careful typing that...)
The definition is "adapt", as such a person might do. "Personalise" has the same sort of meaning.
