yes that was it. I could not parse it but still put the wrong one in!

All was coming along nicely but then got hopelessly stuck on 20 across and 26 across. Did anyone else encounter difficulties?
10 down I assume is South American rider with a welsh church ahead of a God. If so I can't get anything to fit for 20 ac and nothing obvious on 26.

I also had trouble with the clue for 26a - I think 'literal quintet' means the five vowels and 'expressing a', means we drop the 'a' - leaving EIOU for the 'four members', but there isn't really an anagram indicator (still, that's the best I could come up with).

...obviously, 'frenzied' would do, but that's essential as the def for EUOI - double duty?

I came to the same conclusion as you did drxx. I also tried to make the clue work with the alternative spelling - V rather than U - but that was a definite cul-de-sac.

Yes, alwayspuzzled - I was stuck in the cul-de-sac for a while (but the blind bend isn't ideal).

I liked the clue. Do they have to be in order? It was a thematic number of them also which was nice. I suppose suppressing would have been better.

I have enjoyed this puzzle and got all the thematic stuff, but cant solve these.
