Hi Merenz,

Do you mean look up 'meagre' or the actual answer? In my phone app version of Chambers, under the answer, it only gives 'verb', and not transitive, also, the 4th definition is just variants of 'obstacle'.

Brendan, I think it must be the actual answer. I've checked that in my 13th ed Chambers and it gives the things Merenz mentioned. The '4th definition' has its own listing as said above.

Hi Malone,

the 4th heading in my Chambers gives - obstacle, impediment, hindrance, obstruction and so on. Also, it only has 3 headings, noun, verb and preposition - no mention of transitive or intransitive. This is odd because whenever people have referenced Chambers in the past, my phone app version has always matched up.

I meant to say that the 4th definition under verb is "forbid" which, when I look under that, doesn't give anything like "meagre".

My heading marked '1' is about three inches long - lots of noun stuff, then on to verbs. Heading '2' is about units in atmospheric pressure, '3' is about Scots jokes and '4' is 'fish, the maigre', which links with the word in the clue, it's been used before in crosswords.

Sorry Malone, I'm an idiot:-(

Earlier on I was looking up a word and switched from the dictionary app to the thesaurus app and....I forgot to switch back.

I've just now done so and seen it straight away:-)

Thanks again.

Thanks, Brendan. I've never seen the app, but what you were listing was so different I felt obliged to butt in!

No problem, Malone. I've actually messed up like this before. One of the cool features of the phone app is that when you've looked up a word, you can then just swipe right and you get the option the switch straight to the thesaurus to see all it's synonyms. The problems begin when you forget to switch back....!
