quiz, re 33d. If you take out the spare word, an abbreviation for the 2 words on either side of it, + a 4 letter word for 'tops' + note

Thanks Mattrom - makes sense, although I can’t find ‘shipping’ listed as an abbreviation under S.

Kitsune, one definition, in Chambers, of the answer is 'spy'. The answer is also the person responsible for producing this [crossword].

Kitsune, the answer is an old word meaning “spy”, and also refers to a person who produces a Crossword.

Oh dear, I should have seen that! Thank you Wintonian and Malone for putting me right. Now to find some other way to amuse myself until next Saturday...

The first puzzle that I was able to complete without even consulting this forum once. Thanks Opsimath - a real pleasure

Could I emphasise how much the input from those who are quite simply better than me is appreciated. As we face current isolation and possibly a drift into cognitive decline a stretch crossword is a much valued stimulus. I understand that there is a desire not to give the game away too early but could I ask that, once we reach the second half of the week, the first division is relaxed about helping the rest of us.
Mrs Seal is keen on anything that keeps me from barking too loudly in my pond.

Hi numbskull. Look up the ‘instransitive verb’ definition in chambers, plus the 4th option for your word.... it provides an alternative for meagre
