their (joint) surname (when you change 5 letters) ...down main diagonal NW to SE

Is it just me or is it getting harder and harder to fight your way through the adverts on this site?

Anyway, finally finished. Can't make head nor tail of the across clues hidden message, but googled the extra words in the across clues and that gave me the theme. Can't parse 11 or 40 so would appreciate the letter changes there.

for 11 the letters are w/l and 40 l/c, I found 40 hard to parse as well

Those are lower case so L not I, just to be clear

my gobbledegook messages weren't helped by me having 2 wrong. I had m going to r to get tare to get the t, but I see now it should be a to I. May now have a chance.
