Granama1, I often think that posting a query on here gives the brain a kick-start!

Like others, I've got the whole grid and the changes, but it's parsing 5 that's my problem; I'm pretty sure the entry is old large creatures, but where does the extra letter fit in?

5 is a straight clue - 'grotesque' = anag of 'three' down.

Sorry, premature post; meant to add 'so where does the third letter of the down message come from?' 6D presumably?

yes, greengage - a 3 letter synonym for 'poor' minus the 2nd letter.

Woke up (literally and metaphorically) and finally sorted the 2 across messages. Still don't get MEM for 31d, and the misprint in 14a had me baffled for ages - a very devious clue, because I was convinced it was in the second word. 21d would have been a lot easier had I read divided instead of dividend!!

One tiny query from me, for completeness:

How is 35a parsed? The word means Irish girls, changing an O to an E gives us M, and station shortly to return is TS. Where does the O come from? Or is it ‘station shortly’ = S TO return? But I can’t find S alone as an abbreviation for station.

Gitto - Mem. is in chambers as Memento = Latin for ‘remember’.
