Last one. 1d. Bridge team blocking opening getting the bird (4). I have all the letters but the last one. Any hints?

Jadzia, it's a thematic answer/entry. There's a five-letter 'opening' (the theme letters should help there) with a two-letter 'bridge team', card-playing terminology, inside. The clue answer is a bird, the entry isn't...

All jolly good fun apart from some niggles:

1) What point is served by omitting single thematic letters from three clues? OK, they are in sequence but no one is going to be still in the dark by the time they work that out - and for consistency they ought to be omitted everywhere they occur in all the clues

2) This inconsistency is glaringly obvious in the clue to 5ac!

3) What version of the completed grid will the editor judge as correct? I think the setter's use of three entries that would remain as real words points us in the required direction but in the absence of a preamble saying 'solvers must ...' we are on shaky ground.

In short, a brilliant idea giving much enjoyment but falling short of Phi's usual meticulous perfection. Or am I missing something?

Very late arrival at the ball - but have filled the grid and have a letter 'i' from 24 across and a letter 'e' from 14 down.

What am I missing please?
