Bunty, both of those answers involve the thematic 'bit'. Your 34 A idea seems right to me. The original for 28D is in Chambers.

Bunty, I didn't parse 14 D, but I've looked now. My answer has a four-letter word meaning 'hoary state' with a single letter ('one') inside. leading to 'displaying more than one chin'.

PS My parsing can be dodgy!

There's a thematic letter from the last word in the clue.
