I have four entries where the theme word is a prefix and five where it’s a suffix.

I had that too, Teenieleek. I meant to go back to have another look, in case I needed to change anything, but I forgot!

Hi teenieleek & malone, I read the preamble as the unclueds provide 5 prefixes & 4 suffixes rather than 7a.

I read it as the theme word providing the prefixes and suffixes and had a 5/4 split as per the preamble. 36 across is the sticking point. If the unchecked letter is 'g' it works according to my interpretation and if it is 'p' it works according to Ginge's.

Quite muddled now! 36a is an ordinary clue neither containing a g nor a p.
Please clarify for me. Thanks

36a is an anagram of (l) ariat so no g or p involved

Maybe the unclued 40 A is what was meant?

I've got age as the answer to 40a
