I had the age/ape conundrum, but I supposed that the 7 across element of "manage" cannot really be a prefix, as such. By my reckoning 7Ac comes

BEFORE 1Ac (6,5), 10Dn (2,3 repeats 7Ac), 30Ac, 32Ac (2,3) = 4
AFTER 6Dn, 16Ac, 37Ac, 40Ac, 19Dn = 5

It surely can't be a misprint in the preamble?

I looked at CHILD (as a follower) for a while for 16Ac, but ruled this out as I have INURNED for 5Dn and went with the fielder.

Or does it have to be AGE, because APE / AXE are both possibles for the suffix category? I'm an ALE MAN myself.

Apologies Farr. It was an error when I posted. I meant 40 across. I blame old age and dry rot! I can see both sides of the argument here. If the thematic element goes first only 'age' is a possibility but that does not fit in with the rest which are two or three words rather than one. If the thematic element goes second there is more than one possible answer. It seems to be a case of paying your money and taking your choice.

It would be a somewhat convoluted way of phrasing it ....but ...
Could the preamble mean that the ‘unclueds’ are prefixes / suffixes to the theme word?

Hi teenieleek,
I have a 'P' as the unchecked letter in 40A - which works as a prefix to 7A - so I have five prefix and four suffix words (as per the preamble)?

I've got 5 prefixes so I want 10d to be a suffix but I don't see what to put. Roman man? Doesn't roll off the tongue.

As usual I'd appreciate a nudge man.

10 down is two words the second of which is the theme word repeated.

This all depends on how you read the preamble but my reading remains that “man” is the prefix/suffix. So, assuming everyone who’s interested has finished, we have: man of war, man Friday, man to man, man booker prize. We then have third man, Heidelberg man, white man, axe/ape man and elephant man? Four as prefix, five as suffix.
