I need a nudge on my last two: 24d and 26a, both on the LHS grid.

Ah, no need, I've just got them. Funny how that often happens!

I agree. I always thought the point of clues was to give us a clue as to what the answer was but apparently not! Next holiday puzzle will probably be a couple of blank grids with instructions to fill them in with any words that fit.

Re the playing cards - there are two suits of six letters and adding a C to them and anagramming (is that a word?) them produces no 7 letter words for one and 5 for the other. How are we meant to know which one?

You need to add a B, not C!

Hi, the clue for that one in isolation is "club - not clubs", so a suit that is also a different kind of club. Then needs a B adding rather than a C (I found the explanation of the rather vague instructions at the top of this thread very helpful, so thanks to others for that!).

The anagrammised (even less likely to be a word?) solution for this one is a pretty common word, some of them are less so. Pretty dependent on the crossing letters to pick one, which really means needing to get the 'normal' clues first. It's a tough one.
