Hi sunray,
1d. [Opponent], slightly unusual synonym for crazy + Roman Emperor short of his final letter.
22a. [Decide], definition is to limit (unusual word), synonym for a number of horses in a Scottish word for yard.
35a. [Trade], a fast (religious) + risks last sing one of the alternatives for king.

18a as you've noted is "normal" ie no extra word.
There's an alternative to calf and is a homophone (call) of to aid.

ginge, I got all three. So thanks again.
was not aware of the word for horses.
For 35a, I was including A at the beginning.

Still not sure of the whale.

I have all but the last word of quote and the author.
Google has not helped yet.

Still a few to go though.

Hi again sunray, in case phantom doesn't look in again or for a while, yes. The entry specifically mentions newborn whale and also any unweaned animal but you would need to know the entry!
As you have 5 of the 6 letters there are limited possibilities fir a homophone of "to aid/aid".
