I have most of the grid entries and the end game.

But a few elude me.

Each clue has an extra letter to be removed before solving.

17. New Zealand foody follows South African tribesman (5)
S?KA?

19. Took exam about preserving spin in rock (6)
?E?R?S

Thanks.

19 could be terras (ERR in SAT reversed)

Hi sunray,
17. food(y), S.A. (rather than Z.A. for South Africa) + Kai (NZ word for food) = (Malaysian) tribesman.
19. s(p)in, err (sin) in sat reversed = terras (type of rock) a variant of trass.

Thanks ginge.

I am still working on what the last letter of 7D could be.
That would finish this puzzle for me.

Slightly tainted denial spun by Spenser (5)

I believe a in tainted is extra.

Hi again sunray, Spenser is how he's usually referred to in clues; Ed(mund).

You're right sunray, it is 'tinted' and the usual 2 letters for Spenser are at the end.

Thanks ginge.
It would have not occurred to me to think of Spenser as Ed.

Now the answer makes sense.

I must have made a mistake in the grid - the endgame doesn't work. The letter to be erased in 37 cross and 28 down should be an 'a' but I have an 'o'. Any help gratefully received.

Hi williamseal, "o" is correct, the expression (in ODQ) is in Latin.

thanks ginge - sometimes I regret not studying Latin. I did biology instead and a fat lot of use it was.
