Williamseal, I too had a brief panic when I saw the O! Luckily I checked it in the ODQ. I

Williamseal and Ginge, thanks. I assumed it was meant to say 'e', and mentioned it only because I was posting anyway!

I have finished this puzzle without too much difficulty. However I cannot parse 40a. The answer is pretty straightforward, but the only way I can see to parse the clue seems very abstruse, involving an obsolete word for the word their or theirs. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Reeds = enclosures. The D, God (dropping an O from 'good') moves to the front (god to relocate), to give Drees, bears, Scottish word.

Thank you Malone. I was thinking the god was Re rather than D for Deus.
12a. is also interesting. The answer isn’t in Chamber’s or in OED. However when I googled it I found the definition as a northern word meaning poor or paltry. That is not a synonym for the comparative meaner.
