15d is not "nonslip" but something similar. Bob = nod but that has to be "designed". Funny how things become clearer once you post!

1a Swimmer = SCUP around A = diver. The U is moved
6d Stolid = 2 letters usually before "faced". Vital = important / opener / island. I think K is moved. not sure
27a Anagram of REACHED. Famous gorges.
4d Material = ACTUAL + RI + A. I think C moves. Not sure
11a is as you suggest. Remain = ARE.

I have the main course and the dessert in the perimeter, but I'm having difficulties with

10a Queen goes in to examine covering for head. I have E in the perimeter and ?A??U in the grid

3d I was doubtful about quiet Virginias tops. I have A??S in the grid

Because of the nature of most of the perimeter, I've assumed that the top row includes the word COOK. Help with the above would be welcomed.

6d 'stolid' = PO + a word for vital/essential
10a 'Queen' = QU - examine, as in '...the joint'
not 'cook' in the top line.

orson - not 'slip' but S?I?, then 'bob' makes sense.

As is often the case I now have 3d (WAISTS I think) and therefore a classic starter on the top row. D'oh!

Looks like POWDER in the title is going to be MEAL.

...sorry, 3 is plural so it's the slightly less common 2 letters for 'quiet'.

Thanks turast and drxx. I never knew that word could mean powerful. It sounds anything but to me!

3d - anagram of "I was" and "st" for quiet.

Having "are" to mean remain seems to be stretching things a bit, unless I'm missing something. It's part of the verb "to be" which can mean remain but did anyone vote are in that referendum? I shall are at my desk in the meantime.
