Congratulations to that clever old rogue, and thanks so much for the silver, ginge.

"Less commonly, any metal with a potential negative health effect or environmental impact may be termed a heavy metal, such as cobalt, chromium, lithium, and even iron."

chrise: I've read a number of articles about lithium in drinking water, and I believe it was referred to as a heavy metal in all of them.

What a bizarre usage, aristo. It floats on water!

Terms often have different (and even contrary) usages. I was surprised when I first saw "heavy metal" used this way, for an effect rather than an actual attribute, but there it is. Perhaps mostly used by environmentalists.

It ocurred to me later that, as lithium is the lightest of metals, if it is a "heavy metal", then all metals are heavy metals, making the "heavy" superfluous :)

Agreed. Nonetheless, it's used that way.
