MM, 24 A is just an anagram - not a scally!

16 D Has to be distance, confirmed by a crossing answer.

There isn't an 18 D, so I can't help with that.

PS I couldn't be bothered writing out all the clues - apologies to anyone dropping in!

I did look up the missing bit of 8d as soon as I got it, partly to see if it was a real word. It meant nothing yesterday but a light bulb has just come on in my head so I think I have a better chance of finishing now. All the mentions of sinning didn't help me. Naughty rather than sinful, I think.

My thanks to all who have helped.

Thank you Malone, never thought of that as a definition for 24a. I mistakenly put 18d when of course I meant 19d, sorry for the confusion.

MM, glad I could help. I didn't give any hints on 25 D - you probably got that once you'd entered 24 A?

Feel free to ask for further hints/help.

I have started this late.

I am also confused by the preamble.

I do not have 8d. So don't know what is dropped.
8d. Transformed pie with marsh umbellifer (4)

14a. Is at one's home = In?

31a. I have ?OME?. What is the boat?

25d (Criticism of high-speed train quelled by better wheels (7, two words) . I can make two words 3, 4 which means criticism. Contains Two P, T and O. But not sure of the parsing.

That would make 31a ?OMET.

Also any hint on 20d. Soft fruit - stale mandarin? (8)

Still a long way to go.

Thanks.

8 D Just an anagram, leading to an 'umbellifer'. Any crossing letters should show what's to be dropped.

14 and 31, Big hints given earlier, I think.

20 D. Three-letter soft fruit, followed by an unusual word meaning 'stale'. I've seen it in crosswords before, but never anywhere else. It involves a bodily function!

Sunray, yes for your 25 D stuff. An earlier hint will give you the first letter of the first (three-letter) word.

For 31a according to my Chambers, the 3-letter boat is a Spenserian one, not a Scottish one.

I've filled the grid, got the theme etc so I just need to find the 9-letter second name. I thought it would be easy and an earlier hint says it begins in the SW corner and goes left to right but nothing leaps out at me!
