How does these clues work...

Truncated box van going west of ancient Somerset rig? (7) LIASSIC

Life followed by boffin, namely space terribly interesting primarily in practice (9) SCIENTISM

As you may know, my parsing isn't always right, but I'll have a bash!

Truncated box = Cis(t), Van = sail (in Chambers). Going westwards = reverse, so Lias Sic. The misprint's at the end of the clue.

Xwordfan, glad you're all done. I gave up on attempting to parse Scientism (sc= namely, short for silicet in Latin...).

I was delighted to get this finished, but felt rather drained afterwards. There were some tough clues and tricky misprints along the way.

think the parsing of scientism is sc. +en (space) +ti (terribly interesting primarily) in ism (practice).

Still working out the endgame and some of the correct letters, but there is 4-letter word in my grid running up SW-NE diagonal that looks relevant

I've done everything, including the instruction, except for:
