Nice bit of misdirection (for me anyway) from Mr Magoo. Good puzzle, liked all the references in the clued ones to the source.

Yes a nice crunchy puzzle. I suppose the downside is that once one of the themed solutions comes up the others follow immediately.

Last week from Doc the puzzle had a more stately pace as the first unclued solution, once solved, did not lead to the others falling into place - not for me at least!

Thanks teenieleek for starting this thread. I have enjoyed the puzzle- havíng dodged the misdirection - but I remain unable to find a solution for the unclued 9D. A hint may be needed - I am thinking of a musical work.

Truron, it's not musical - more poetic...

Not sure it really has a hyphen?

I found not a single reference with a hyphen, so I don't know where the setter's came from!

I’ve completed it, but my usual plea for a bit of help with parsing:

19a - means pirate, can’t quite parse the rest.
16d - means £1/1000, but why ‘that might arise?’?
35d - means ‘spot for nest’, but why the rest?

Also, what’s the misdirection everyone’s referring to?

19a - Separat = separate almost with chief in poem = P left (gone).
16d - no idea about "that might arise".
35d - Bird's content = IR. Centre = EYE.

I cannot see any misdirection either, sorry!

John le Carre?

I thought that for a while, lumen, but it's not so. The title of a poem is 9d and it should not be hyphenated, although it is in Chambers. It's a new poem to me.
