Strange to find nothing her on in The Other Place by the middle of Saturday afternoon … can this be because there appears to be a problem with the Maxim revealed by the Across lights? I have, with one letter wrong, an apt maxim of the correct length. But I need two Ns and only one S, whereas the lights give one N and two, er, "esses". Is it me, or has Homer nodded? Or are there two apt maxims differing by just that one pesky letter?

Hi cockie, are you remembering the preamble about 3 hung over impostors? There are 5 potential (iii)s among the across omitted letters so perhaps it's worth which 3 you've allocated to this category.

Hi gitto, it's not easy to give a hint to 14a without making the parsing obvious. It is an "unaffected" across entry so wordplay omits 1 letter. If you need a further push post again.
Yes, all hangovers are consistent.

Re 14 across: I believe that "Georgia" refers to the country, rather than the US state. I surmise that the letter not indicated by the wordplay is the fourth.
Caveat: I don't know how "to the west" fits in.

Please ignore my first posting (number 6); it isn't helpful.

This was a strange one. I completed most of the grid and got the item before I properly understood the thematic manipulations. Now I have a completed grid with the maxim and item but so many loose ends it will take an hour or two tomorrow morning before I am happy it is all correct.
Is there anything clever about the title?
