No. My afternoon has been spent worrying the last few clues of the Listener, now happily all finished. The telly tonight looks pretty good, so I guess it'll be tomorrow before I do any more on this one. Is 1D a big help, I wonder?

Thanks - that should help. In the quiet pre-Endeavour moments I've found the three related entities, and a fireplace-shaped 10-letter word round one of them, but no similar 10-letter words have yet appeared. I'm no further forward with how to complete 12A, but doubtless the penny will drop soon.

Cockie, just a reminder - 'three appropriately positioned 10-letter words, all in identical patterns.'. You have one....

I have all three now. Nice to reacquaint myself with something I read to the next generation donkey's years ago.

I am completely bamboozled by the endgame - nothing new there. I have a full grid (apart from 12 across) and both answers for each of 9 and 13 down. As far as I can see those would give either 'one' or 'two' at 12 across. After that I am lost. Does something need to removed from the grid leaving blank cells? As for the three blocks of 2x2 cells and the three 10 letter words which need highlighting I am completely in the dark. When I get chance later I will see if the titles of the books by 1 down will yield a clue. The piscine one begins 'one, fish, two fish' so that will be my starting point.
