Red-nosed maybe ? Seems like an appropriate time to wish all the regulars well for the solstice/wigilia/christmas, whatever your preference.

Nudge please anyone ? I am stuck trying to extract a thematic name from H(a)milton. Did Edward have a different name in the original version?

Moffat, you can't extract much from Hamilton. That reference is there to suggest a scottish version of lore (lare). Edward is in 10D.

Of course. Thanks Meursault. And, while we're here, thanks also to you and others for hints and nudges from time to time over the past umpteen years. I confess to being one of those voyeurs who peep when stuck but contribute bugger-all.

Very welcome, Moffat. Likely there are quite a few who are 'read-only' on the forum. I don't see that as a problem at all, in fact the more people who can get assistance from comments on here, the better.

Just a final thought from me on this, I was initially thrown by the phrase in the preamble "Before solving a thematic number of clues....".

I took this to suggest that a specific number was probably going to be present in the theme so, having first my thematic character starting 'A', I made the assumption that the theme could perhaps be 'Twelfth Night'. Having got back on track with the correct author, I then tried to shoe-horn my answers into 'Ten Little.....'

Wouldn't the preamble have been better to say "Before solving a number of thematic clues....'? Am I still missing something or just being pedantic?

Simon, I think in this case it was probably best not to try to read too much into 'thematic number'. The title of the puzzle was 'Jury', suggesting 12; that was all the connection to the names that was needed. I did first look for courtroom dramas by AC, I think one exists, but the more names I googled, the more definite was the connection to MotOE. The difficulty with overthinking in this case is that you might end up seriously up a creek, thinking that Twin has connections to MInnesota, there is a well-known (in Minnesota) model of AA rehab treatment which is 12 step, so was this the setter getting in a pre-festive warning...
