Many thanks for your excellent reply. Once I was able to get the final three answers (thanks for your hints) everything fitted together. I cannot believe that I could not get them myself.

I must say that I am totally underwhelmed by this puzzle. Why are the quadrants filled differently? What is the connection between four "humours" and four elements? Even Empedocles did not call them elements. This is not even a "crossword". I also think that some of the clues are weak. Anyway, it is all behind me now. Here's hoping 4472 is better.

Thepost, I agree with several of your points. I'm trying to temper my own criticisms recently, simply because I've been vocal for a long time. But, yes, the different grid constructions didn't really constitute a crossword. And while I welcomed any reference to philosophy, I too wasn't really happy with the merger of elements.

But I disagree on one thing you say : though you are correct that I defected (more accurately my AB sign-on was cancelled), there were always good advisers on this forum. Kilgore Trout no longer contributes, though I hope he is well. DJA is consistently helpful, and probably a quicker solver than me...and there are many others on the forum who contribute in similar spirit...it works well.
