Struggling towards the end having received help from previous posts. I still have 42ac to do and 34d. Although I can't parse 37ac, 2d, 7d, 21d, 23d, 34d and 35d, I have the solutions. Piece of cake really.

Bigf, you didn't give the clues so I had to wait until I was home before I could help...

42 A. This man is found cutting diamonds for dubious doxies (8)
Heresies - He Resides, with the D, diamonds, removed.

2 D Sweetheart against joining Lynne's group between the sheets? (7) Beloved, sweetheart. ELO is Jeff Lynne's group, inside Bed, between the sheets.

There may be extra letters to be put in before solving. I didn't look for those.

Thank you Malone and Crucifer. I will have another look once I have eaten but the theme is still eluding me. I( still need to find some of the added letters.

I 've got the theme and all the alterations but I can't make anything of the letters leading to the reward. Do two of the themed words end in 'S' ?

Yes,two themed words end in S. The 'reward' isn't spectacular! The letters involved in going down from 7 D were a great help to me.

@alwayspuzzled - I would suggest looking at the definitions in 13a, 20a, 39a, 1d, 9d, 18d, 21d, 25d and 32d.

I think these are correct (aplologies if not), but would appreciate help with the parsing.....

17d Ranunculus's relatives suffering headaches around end of puzzle (10) - HELLEBORES I think! (Ranunculus's relatives)

I'm not sure if it's relevant but the puzzle is titled 'Blonde Ambition by Ranunculus'.

27d Worked up about breaking English opening stand (7) - ETAGERE (Stand)

Hi brendan,
17. Here the setter being ranunculus is a red herring. The plants hellebores are related to ranunculus; suffering = hell + bores = headaches round (puzzl)e.
27 worked up is a reversal indicator. About = re in E (English) + gate = opening. All reversed.
