I'm probably being obtuse but how does the message (which I have deduced as 8 words in total from extra letters in 34 clues) relate to or pinpoint the ''thematic location''? Any hints appreciated

Izzet, in chronological sequence of the chancellors (ie the clash cells representing the chancellors), just read off the letter at the bottom of its column and the letter at the left of its row. In sequence string those pairs of letter together and you have the thematic location.

Like a few others here I've decided to up my game to "Listener" from Times Cryptic/Jumbo. A step up indeed. Without this forums help I would not have got past half a filled grid on this beauty. This year I've solved three unaided and another ten or so with assistance. Thanks all for the tips. Greatly appreciated.

I currently use a BRB inherited from my grandfather. 1982 edition. Reminds me of him each time I open it and happy Christmas's doing holiday Jumbo's. But obviously some word shortages. Like movieoke. So the question: buy a current BRB and consign grandfather to the shelf or stick with my heart and the occasional lack of word?

Hi Deulc, a nice comment. My advice : stick with your heart. My Chambers didn't have movioke either. If I'm sure that I've interpreted the wordplay correctly, but have ended up with a word not listed, I just look up online.

I too had an earlier Chambers, but it fell apart and I replaced it in 2008. Now I've needed to repair the 2008 copy, binding it in two halves...
