Thanks Malone - it is not in my very old Chambers -must get new one.

Incidently, does 1A parse correctly? I can see red is omitted but what indicates the anagram that U is put in for roundups?

Sorry, jigjag, I realised later -when it was too late! - what you meant. I don't see an anagram indicator myself - all that's left in the clue is 'on to' (the 'hold' being to contain the 'u').

"On" meaning "drunk". It's a very common anagram indicator - look it up in Chambers
