All complete except for SW corner. However I can't make sense of the deleted words/letters. They seem to begin "red gate crane..". What's that all about?

thanks crucifer. I have never seen "on" used in that sense in crosswords. Nor have I heard of it.

Local slang would be "Dave's well on" (...the way to being drunk), but never "Dave's on". It must be used somewhere though.

I put the letters of the last four Down clues (joining 3) into Google and that solves it. I already had an idea from the titles and connecting shaded squares.

Thanks jigjag, but I still can't see it. My google attempt comes up with a rose grower. I'll keep plodding on.

Bigf, if you've got all, most of the shaded squares, read clockwise from the one at 33 D. That gives you most of the theme.

Assume you have got Wheatcroft. Add "straight" from the last down clue and google again

Bigf, glad you got it finished. I'm not sure how niche it was - I think we've had far worse! I wasn't very interested in the thematic element - but maybe it was timed to go with an event there last weekend? (That's a guess.)

Bigf - well done. Like Malone I did not think it was too bad as far as niche goes -and agree with him that some have been a lot worse - or impossible for me.

When I solved it, I too thought there must have been an important event there last weekend - but there was an only an insignificant one on, so I dont know about the timing.

I thought it was an interesting puzzle though.
