Ros, my first "practice car" was a "heap" ( second -hand Hillman Imp.) It was all I could afford until I saved up to buy a brand new Mini :) Too long ago.....

We had heaps until my husband died, more or less. as he could keep them running. When we bought a Volvo from my parents, our accountant said "A Volvo? A real one?"
(we had a company, therefore needed an accountant. He didn't like our "heaps" as company cars).
A brand new Mini must have been a real thrill. They are made near here. It's quite exciting watching the process; the first part is all done by robots!

I wonder if the factory had robots in the 60's . It was a sad day when I had to say goodbye to her . She never let me down, but a larger car was needed to copy with many regular trips on the M3
