All done apart from 17d, which contains a 39. Any hints to the (full) answer would be much appreciated.

For those of us without the crossword the full clue would help, including the answer to 39.

I am stuck on this! I have five 39s, one of which (the intersection of 41a and 28d) gives a well-known name for a 42 when I combine the missing letters from both clues. However the other four give me nonsense names, as far as I can see. Am I on the right track here? Any hints welcome.

I am also stuck in the NE corner. Please could I have a hint for

5d. Princess about to participate in awfully hard university game - I have A?H__S where ? is probably a number of letters

7d Warning invoving end of guarantee on that account - I have Y_EA_

I am in the same position as if not a little behind Bobbibunny. I have 7 down beginning with t ( threat round e, i.e. the end of guarantee ) but that is about all the help I can give. 21 across ( Black garnet we once regularly found in yellow mineral ) 3 down ( Japanese warrior runs forward into concealment ), 5 down ( Princess about to participate in awfully hard university game ) and 36 down ( Research raised in complex lecture ) are all proving beyond me and I also suspect that Pascal at 21 down is wrong. Apart from that I seem to have more than six intersections which need replacing with a 39 across. Any hints would be really appreciated.

I have just had another look at this - work can wait for a while - and thanks to Bobbibunny's reference to a well known 42 I think I may now on the right track...a preserved one with that particular 42 being at the end of it.

I had completely the wrong sort of 42 in mind! I can now see that these are anagrams.
21a is we once regularly in pyrite (yellow mineral)
3d Japanese warrior is ronin (in can mean into concealment)

Still stuck on 5d and 7d.....
