I thought the other was TOT in middle of Bess the T being extra?

I thought it might be

next to = at
nothing = o

So A extra. TO in BESS

I had a T over in the letters I needed for the unclued so hence my answer. That doesn't mean of course the other extra letters were right!

By one of those odd coincidences this picture (or rather a reproduction of it) hangs in my flat. But I'm stuck with the fictional character, and also 28A. Is the fictional character to do with the birds or their mammalian reflections?

The fictional character is a big animal from Tarzan.

The fictional character is at the bottom so must be the mammal...google fictional .....s and you should easily see it in the list
