But I can at least help Meursault with cells 23 etc: the two letters are indeed the initials of the significant point, arrived at by 'reflecting' the letters according to the coding system.

I agree with saoralba that a single line applied to the title will comply with the H. As to the A, I think the eight objects need to be added to the 'transformed' four letters to produce representations of four new letters. But I can't see the name common to both expeditions to be encoded using elements of D, any hints...?

Well I think I completed the grid correctly, and now, like others, I'm having a lot of trouble solving the rest of the puzzle.

The name common to both expeditions *seemed* obvious, but that would result in code options six of one and five of another. Have I got the wrong name, then?

I also still don't understand "adding a line above the grid, to confirm A". Just making sure that H in the title with a single pen stroke scarcely "confirms A", does it?

Hugely enjoyable puzzle though and these final hair-tearings are just part of the fun... probably!

I too have a common name that gives 6 and 5. If it's 6 and 6 does that mean that the word must be only three letters long (each made of four coded bits) so that it fits in the row with a blank separating each letter?

That seems like it would be just a wee bit short of vowels...

The folk elsewhere are also puzzled by the 6-5 (not 6-6) problem. I reckon it's an oversight by Those In Charge. Still can't see how "a line" can represent two adjectives. The eight things to be added are indeed in the four special cells. Seven are obvious and the other one is unused in that cell, but is still in the operator's hand. I need a clue for the b------ line though.

If the single line is to be addded to the title, it's an unwelcome reminder of that dratted hare. How long before we have to cut out a word from a headline on the front page and paste it over the grid? Makes one wish for something straightforward like an origami wren.

It's been suggested to me to make it

Army and Wavy by adding a line to the N.

A pun but may make sense?

Yes, djawhufc, that was my thought.

Grid solved, but no idea about the theme. I can (I presume) see the two lines that describe the expedition; I've made several guesses but can't find anything that gives me any certainty about which expeditions I'm looking for. This sort of guesswork and internet searching is ridiculous.
