What is the nature of the thematic changes that have to be made?

Occasional and furniture are the clues

You need a synonym for both words which together make up a system that then helps you convert your answers into the grid entries.

How will that change the length of some entries and change most of the letters of others?
Does occasional = odd?

I've deduced it must be the Periodic Table, but can't work out how to "thematically change " the clue solutions to get the grid entry. Any help would be appreciated!

Retired Chemistry teacher, but don't know much about Tantalum. How about TANTALUS?

Despite DJAWHFC's excellent hint I still cannot see how the answers are converted to atomic numbers and thus to grid entries. I have tried adding A = 1 etc. but to no avail. A pointer in the right direction would be much appreciated.
