Got the top row within minutes of starting but ...
have filled grid with exception of unclued down entry FI.EN.. and bottom row.
Any hints to the surname of "author" of other work, please?

Bottom row is Initials followed by surname

Sadly, some of us just are simply illiterate.

I agree that this just does not meet Listener standards.
How did it get approved by the editors?
Especially as Calmac has contributed over a long period and proved himself as a capable setter.

I always look forward to Saturdays and the Listener. It's a pity that this week is such a let down. Far too easy. I think I only missed cold solving three clues without having to go back to them.

1d basins is the defn (more usually beaches abroad) 4 letter word for amusement + 2 letters for for instance
18a it's underneath 1a! ?

Many thanks sudokulover... was not aware of the foreign beaches... had even a/ considered 1d = ****te = river boat... (possible parse to Title name)... & b/ 18a/ = e*g* = there(for) --- by the cringe!!! I've only just observed the run-on Thanks muchly, Bebbspoke
